The Story Behind Deirdre O’Donnell Contemporary Jewellery

When Deirdre O’Donnell was just 16, she took a jewellery making course that immediately enthralled and excited her. Following her formal education, she completed an apprenticeship with a renowned goldsmith, Hugh Statham before attending The School of Jewellery in Birmingham. There, she spent a year learning from incredible jewellery manufacturers, visiting workshops, and exploring the jewellery scene of Birmingham.

Deirdre then went to work at Robert Glenn in London, 6 days a week, learning everything she could in the vibrant city. In the 90s, she finally started her business, Deirdre O’Donnell Contemporary Jewellery, in Soho in London. She also held an exhibition in Kew Gardens.

After a successful start in London, Deirdre relocated back to her home of Ireland, setting up shop in Dublin and continuing to craft magnificent pieces and developing her personal style. Deirdre opened her little shop at 19 Anne Street South in the heart of Dublin, giving Deirdre O’Donnell Contemporary a permanent home.

Deirdre designs and meticulously handcrafts bespoke, limited edition, and collectable jewellery, from 18ct gold and platinum to silver, all set with ethically sourced precious and semi‑precious gemstones. Her creations marry Irish heritage with worldly inspiration, delivering elegant understatement that resonates with meaning.

One of Deirdre’s most popular and unique collections is the River Collection. The bangles offer their wearer the ability to choose custom colour ribbons to wear the piece over and over again in different styles.

Though based in Dublin, Deirdre’s clientele spans globally, from London, Dubai, the USA, Australia and across Europe. She travels regularly to source unique gemstones and meet fellow artisans who enrich her creative process.

Deirdre’s latest venture, Cada Piedra Design, is a labour of love based just outside of Valencia in Spain. Inspired by the natural surroundings and the ancient castles of the Bolbaite region, Deirdre has crafted collections based on her favourite locations in the area. Her pieces are available to shop online here.

In addition to her successful jewellery businesses, Deirdre also runs an apprenticeship-style Jewellery School above her shop, educating global students in a full-time, one year course. Students must apply, and during the course will master the art of goldsmithing, create their own collections, and leave ready to start their careers.

Deirdre’s talents have been showcased in The Irish Times, Image Magazine, Social & Personal, Confetti, and on Virgin Media Television, proof of her impact across both local and international design circles.

Deirdre O’Donnell Contemporary Jewellery is a true testament to the heart and soul behind successful jewellery making, infusing every piece with timeless elegance and a lasting story.
